Headless SEO for Wix and AI-built websites

Headless SEO

A coded site gives you full control, and that includes every SEO job the editor used to do for you. If you're not an SEO specialist, titles, sitemaps, speed and accessibility are easy to miss or do twice. We check what Google and AI search actually read, then fix it.

Why it happens

When the editor stops doing your SEO

On a normal Wix site, the editor does a lot of SEO for you. It builds the sitemap, adds the title and description you set in the dashboard, and asks for alt text. Go headless, or build with an AI coding tool, and those jobs become code. If nobody writes that code, nobody does the job.

Wix says it plainly in its developer docs: on a self-managed headless site, none of the SEO is automatic. Wix doesn't add any tags to your pages, and doesn't serve a robots.txt or a sitemap for you.

Wix-managed projects built with Astro get more of it done for them, which is why we build that way. Even then, it's easy to end up with two titles on one page, a sitemap that misses your CMS pages, or copy that only shows up after JavaScript runs. We know, because we hit most of these on our own site.

If you're not an SEO specialist, you won't see what's missing until the traffic doesn't come.

What gets missed, and what gets done twice

The problems we find most on coded and AI-built sites. You can't see them in a browser. A crawler sees them straight away.

  • Two titles on one page

Wix serves main page titles from the dashboard, and the code adds its own as well. Search engines get two and pick one. It happened on our own site.

  • Copy that waits for JavaScript

Many AI-built sites draw the page in the browser. Google says server-side rendering or pre-rendering is still a good idea, because not every bot runs JavaScript.

  • Sitemaps with gaps

Wix lists its own pages. Blog posts, CMS items and custom pages need to be in a sitemap too, once each, at the address you want indexed.

  • Redirects that fight

Old redirect rules from the previous site can loop against the new site's own. Our About and Blog pages did, until we checked every old redirect.

  • Schema that doesn't match

Structured data copied from a template, or describing things that aren't on the page. Markup should only describe what a visitor can see.

  • Second languages with no title

Wix's developer docs say secondary-language versions of main pages don't get their own title or meta description yet. Bilingual sites need a plan for it.

What we do

Our headless SEO service

We start with the HTML a crawler gets, not the page you see. Then we fix what's missing, biggest cost first.

  1. A crawl of the live HTML

We fetch every page the way Google and AI crawlers do, and list what's missing, doubled or wrong.

  2. One title, one description

One title, description and canonical per page, set where your platform expects them, so nothing is written twice.

  3. Sitemaps, robots and redirects

Every live page in a sitemap once, nothing you've hidden, and a 301 redirect for every old address.

  4. Structured data from the page

Organization, Service, Article, FAQ and breadcrumb markup, only for what's actually on the page.

  5. Speed without cutting features

Images in WebP at the right size, video that waits until it's needed, smaller fonts, and scripts that stop blocking the page.

  6. Accessibility that helps search too

Alt text that describes the picture, one H1, headings in order, readable contrast, and motion that respects reduce motion settings.

How we handle SEO on every Wix build

How a headless SEO project runs

Four steps. You see the list before we change anything.

  1. Free call with Anna

Tell Anna what you've built and what you want from search. You'll hear why you rank where you rank, and what to look at first.

  2. Audit

We crawl the live site and send you the fixes in order, with what each one affects.

  3. Fixes

We make the changes in your code, or hand your developer a clear list. You choose.

  4. Watch

We check Search Console every day for two weeks after the fixes go live, and tell you what moved.

We tested it on ourselves

From 64 to 99 on mobile, without cutting a feature

We rebuilt vismarketing.co.uk on Wix Headless in October 2026. The first build scored 64 for mobile performance. The homepage loaded 27.6 MB, and its largest image took 25 seconds to appear on a phone.

We changed how things load instead of cutting anything. Big images got WebP copies, and the founder photo went from 1.6 MB to 70 KB. Fonts went from 83 KB to 33 KB per weight. Matched fallback fonts took layout shift to zero, and YouTube videos show a thumbnail until you press play.

On the live domain on 29 October, the homepage scored 99 for mobile performance and 100 for SEO and accessibility. Read how we rebuilt our own website for the full story, including the four things that went wrong.

By the end, the biggest drag on speed was two scripts in the site's custom code. Check yours first.

Headless SEO questions

Can't see your question? Ask us. We reply within one working day.

  • What is headless SEO?

Headless SEO is SEO for a website whose pages are built in code, separate from the system that holds the content. The goals are the same as on any site. The difference is that titles, sitemaps, structured data and speed are your code's job, not the editor's.

  • Is Wix Headless good for SEO?

Yes, if it's built properly. With Astro on Wix hosting, Wix serves the SEO tags, sitemap and robots.txt for main pages from your dashboard settings. Blog posts, products and CMS pages need their SEO wired in code, and we do that on every route. We check the live HTML before launch.

  • Do AI-built websites rank on Google?

They can. The usual problem is that many AI-built sites draw their content in the browser with JavaScript. Google recommends server-side rendering or pre-rendering, partly because not every bot runs JavaScript. We check what your pages send before any script runs.

  • Why does my site have two titles?

Usually because two parts of the site both write one. On Wix Headless, main page titles come from the dashboard, so code that adds its own creates a second. Wix's developer docs say to let the dashboard own those tags.

  • Does page speed affect SEO?

Google says its ranking systems use Core Web Vitals, which measure loading, responsiveness and layout shift. Speed also decides whether people stay on the page. We aim for green scores without cutting the features you built.

  • Can you work with my developer?

Yes. We can make the fixes ourselves, or give your developer a list in order of priority, with what each fix affects.

  • What does a call with Anna cost?

Nothing. It's a free call on Google Meet or the phone. If you'd like us to do the work afterwards, you get a fixed price first.
