Case study: How a local gas engineer ended up inside Google's AI answer

Google "best value boiler service in Farnham" right now and something interesting happens.

The ads come first, as always. Then Google's AI Overview steps in — and it names our client.

Not a national chain. Not a lead-generation directory. A small, Gas Safe-registered team from Badshot Lea: Ignite Gas & Heating. The AI explains why it picked them, pulls in their Checkatrade record and local reviews, and even quotes their standard boiler service price.

Nobody clicked anything to get that answer. Google assembled it. And it assembled it from work we'd been quietly putting in for months. Here's how that happened.

The client

Ignite Gas & Heating is a small, local heating team covering Farnham, Fleet, Farnborough, Aldershot and the surrounding Hampshire and Surrey villages. Boiler servicing, repairs, installations, central heating work. Most of their business has always come through recommendation.

What they came to us for

The brief was familiar: more visibility in the towns they actually serve. They were known in their patch but invisible online beyond it — the classic problem for a trade business that's brilliant at the work and has no time for marketing.

The real problem underneath

The brief said "rank better." The actual problem was that their online presence didn't reflect how a local trade business gets chosen.

Nobody picks a gas engineer the way they pick a pair of trainers. They search for their town, they check reviews, they want a price they can sanity-check, and they want to know the person turning up is registered and local. Most trade websites give Google none of that — one generic "areas we cover" page and a phone number.

A man in a blue work uniform stands with arms crossed in front of a white van labeled "HATS Gas and Heating" and "velilor." The van has a ladder on its roof.

A gas engineer doesn't get chosen like a product. They get chosen like a neighbour you can trust.

And the ground was shifting under everyone's feet. Google's AI Overviews now answer the question before a visitor ever reaches a website. If your business isn't in the sources the AI trusts, you're not in the conversation at all.

What we did

No tricks. Just thorough local groundwork, done properly.

A dedicated page for every town they serve. Fleet, Farnborough, Farnham, Aldershot, Yateley, Godalming and Church Crookham each got their own page — not a copy-paste template with the town name swapped out. Each page talks about the actual area: the housing stock around Ancells Farm, the period properties near Elvetham Road, the GU postcodes they cover. Written like someone who's actually driven those streets, because the client has. We've covered before why lazy location pages backfire for trade businesses — the difference is in the detail.

Real answers to real questions. Every location page carries FAQs built from things customers genuinely ask — low water pressure in Fleet homes, radiators in loft conversions, landlord gas safety checks. All structured with schema markup so search engines (and now AI systems) can read them as answers, not just text. Wix now handles much of this structured data automatically, which makes the foundations easier to get right.

Reviews wired into the site. Genuine customer reviews, matched to the relevant towns and pulled into each location page, alongside their Checkatrade presence.

Honest, visible pricing. Clear pricing for standard work, stated plainly on the site. More on why that mattered below.

Clean technical foundations. Proper meta titles and descriptions, internal linking between service and location pages, and structured data throughout — built on Wix, which handles this better than its reputation suggests.

AI search didn't change what good local SEO looks like. It raised the price of not doing it.

The result

The headline win is the one you can see for yourself: Google's AI Overview now features Ignite Gas & Heating for boiler service searches in their area. It cites their website and their Checkatrade reviews as the reasons, and when someone asks about cost, it quotes their actual price range — £80 to £90 for a standard service — taken straight from the site.

That last detail matters more than it looks. The AI quoted their price because we published it. Competitors who hide their pricing simply don't get mentioned when the question is about value.

You can't be the "best value" answer if Google can't find your prices.

The numbers are moving too. Comparing the last 30 days with the previous 30 in Wix Analytics: site visits are up around a third, and enquiry form submissions have doubled — with most of those landing in the past week as the AI visibility kicked in. For a business this size, every one of those enquiries is a real job for a real local customer. Early days, and we'd rather report honest momentum than dress up a percentage.

What we learned

Google has said AI results will take up more and more of the search page over the coming months. Most local trade businesses aren't ready for that — very few gas companies publish fresh content, structured FAQs or visible pricing.

That's the takeaway that applies well beyond this client: AI Overviews don't reward clever optimisation. They reward businesses that put verifiable, specific, locally relevant information where machines can read it. Reviews on trusted platforms. Prices on the page. Content that proves you know the area. It's the same groundwork that put a rendering company at the top of Google — the search page just rewards it in new places now.

Google's AI doesn't trust claims. It trusts evidence — reviews, prices, and pages that prove you know your patch.

The agencies promising "AI SEO magic" are selling the same thing we've always done: thorough, honest groundwork. The difference is that now the gap between businesses that do it and businesses that don't is visible in the answer box itself.

If you run a local service business and you're wondering whether you'd show up in Google's AI answers, drop us a line — we'll take a look and tell you straight.

FAQs

What is a Google AI Overview?

It's the AI-generated answer Google now shows at the top of many search results, above the normal listings. It summarises an answer from sources Google trusts — websites, review platforms and directories — often before the searcher clicks anything.

There's no submission form. The AI picks businesses whose information it can verify across multiple sources: a website with specific, locally relevant content, structured FAQs, visible pricing, and consistent reviews on platforms like Checkatrade or Google. Our job is making sure all of that exists and is machine-readable.

In our experience with Ignite Gas & Heating, yes. When searchers asked about boiler service costs, Google's AI quoted the client's published price range directly. Businesses that hide pricing can't be part of that answer.

Properly written ones do. Seven thin copy-paste pages will hurt you; seven pages with genuine local knowledge, town-specific FAQs and matched reviews are exactly the kind of source AI Overviews cite.

Months, not days. The Ignite groundwork was built over several months before the AI visibility and the enquiry uplift showed up. Anyone promising AI search rankings in a fortnight is guessing.
